SATB, unaccompanied. Setting of poem by John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester (1 April 1647 – 26 July 1680) who was an English Libertine and a friend of King Charles II. Although he is known as a writer of much satirical and bawdy poetry, this text is quite philosophical and accessible to all sensibilities. A copy of the text can be found here. The setting features modern harmonies, with structures recalling renaissance and baroque styles and is ideally suited for a 20-30 voice ensemble, collegiate or professional level, however the piece may also be suitable for a semi-professional group, or even an advanced high school choir.
